A Brow-Wiper For The Pen

Rough but happy day for Enny Romero and some of his friends

Enny Romero’s friends let him down

Catch your breath yet? What a weird, wild Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park.

The bullpen blinked, but the offense offered enough muscle to slap aside the Stinkin’ Saux.

There was the Rays’ 1-0 lead, then the 5-1 deficit, then the 8-5 edge, then the 8-8 tie, then the 12-8 final. This four-hour, 16-minute cliffhanger put your emotions through a tumble dryer.

But in the end, your Rays earned sweet, satisfying victory.

Right-hander Jake Odorizzi coughed up five runs in four innings. Then relievers Enny Romero, Danny Farquhar and Xavier Cedeno allowed one run each. Romero fanned three and walked one through 1 2/3, but Farquhar was tossing batting practice. If not for some massive RBI relief, the narrative from this one would have centered on the bullpen going boom.

There were many close calls. Erasmo Ramirez improved to 4-0, but he flirted with danger in 1 1/3 innings. Dana Eveland and Alex Colome were spotless, but they appeared after three insurance runs were gifted in the top of the ninth inning.

Who knows what would have happened with the pressure of preserving a one-run lead?

The result will be long forgotten in a few months. But after days like this, you wipe your brow, whisper “Whew!” and move on.

Your bullpen stats.

Where’s Cash’s brain ??? The M & M turds went 1 fer 7 yesterday with 3 KOs and no RBIs. Morrison hitting .067. It’s almost May and he’s hitting .067 ! The worst hitting pitchers in the NL hit a hundred points better and he’s our designated HITTER ! Not our designated strike out, Pop up to the third baseman, or weak grounder to first out. Miller had another error yesterday and is batting .106. Woo Hoo !. and then there is Hank Conger, the Mickey Mantle of this ggoup hitting.182.. Let’s see, he can’t hit, can’t throw runners out at 2nd (another one yesterday, what is it, 45 or 46 in a row? REALLY!), and can’t block pitches in the dirt, But can fool umpires with his framing. Well, frame this ! I’ll let you guess what it is. We lost by a measly run yesterday. We are in last place in the hardest division in baseball. Every loss is a big one no matter what month it is. Is there no one in our organization that beat this pathetic trio ? I’m about ready to pull out my laser wand and go all old testament on the front office. Sternberg, make a phone call here ! Great job Snell !
