Another Pitching Dud

Erasmo RamírezEras-NOOOOO!

Normally when Joe writes about Erasmo Ramirez, it’s after a sunny event has occurred. He’s the workhorse of the Rays’ bullpen. He has been rock steady so often. It was easy to make the case that he was Tampa Bay’s early-season MVP.

But yesterday in Miami, Erasmo-mentum fizzled and gave way to a big ol’ late-inning failure.

Ramirez was front and center in the Marlins’ two-run eighth-inning rally, which propelled them to a 7-6 win in the fake rivalry known as the Citrus Series. He allowed an infield single to Miguel Rojas before Adeiny Hechavarria singled to right and Rojas advanced to third base. After Ramirez was pulled, Cole Gillespie hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Hechavarria scored when Martin Prado grounded out.

Look, Joe will cut Ramirez some slack. Even after taking the loss, Ramirez is 6-2 with a 2.43 ERA. And if we’re in the mood to dish out blame, Matt Moore went just five innings against the Fish, his fourth consecutive start in which he tapped out early.

Sure, Ramirez could have been better. But when Matt Moore pitches like Matt Less, the Rays flirt with danger.

This time, Ramirez couldn’t save the day.

Letting a relief pitcher go 2 innings is a big stretch. 3 innings is insanity!

Why don’t the Rays have a plan for the 8th inning? A plan for the 9th inning?

Chalk up another L that should have gone into the W column.

Props to Lomo, he’s starting to look like a great pick up. Souza looking like an All Star.

I saw James Loney drinking a Canchanchara at the Clevelander and his hair was muy perfecto!

Can’t beat up on Erasmo; he’s been golden all year. What can you say, this is a team of contradictions.Supposed to have great starting pitching and weak & inexperienced bullpen. The opposite is true. Offensive power was weak last year, now leading the major leagues in dingers. Great defense last year; this year, not so much. New additions in the off season supposed to help with hitting. With the exception of last week, terrible. New manager has a year under his belt, still making terrible decisions concerning the pitching staff. Brad Miller has a chance to hit for the cycle, gets taken out for a pinch hitter. Mr. Cash – less, he’s obviously hitting the ball better than well and you’re taking him out for pinch hitter ? Have to admit, at least it’s more exciting than suffering through a 3 1/2 hour 2 to 1 loss like last year.
