Bullpen Microscope: Out Of The Boxberger

April 6th, 2016

Alex ColomeLost in last night’s replay bonanza and the Blue Jays’ hot air was the fact that the Rays staged their first ninth-inning experiment without Brad Boxberger.

So far, so good.

Right-hander Alex Colome survived the circus to gain the win, after allowing three hits and one walk with one strikeout in two innings. Granted, the discussion would have been mighty different had the Replay Zeuses not gifted Tampa Bay a game-ending reversal on Jose Bautista’s slimy slide at second base.

Still, justice was delivered. Give Colome credit. He did enough to scratch through a leadoff infield single by Ryan Goins, a one-out single by Josh Donaldson and a one-out walk by Bautista and secure a much-needed victory over pouty Toronto.

It wasn’t clean. It wasn’t pretty. But mission accomplished.

Meanwhile, Dana Eveland and Steve Geltz fared well after Jake Odorizzi faltered, surrendering just two hits and one walk in 1 1/3 innings between them. Eveland appears to be an early fascination for manager Kevin Cash, having received a bullpen-high 2 1/3 innings of work in two games. Geltz has been solid in two contests, as well.

Even with the win, it has to concern the Rays that their top three starters have looked so vulnerable. Yes, the Blue Jays have more power than a Duke Energy substation. Yes, it’s so early. Yes, there’s time to figure everything out.

But if this first series is a sign of things to come, the bullpen could have another heavy workload this season.
