The Archer Freefall

April 15th, 2016

archerrays2Forget about Cy Young Award contention. How about trying to pitch six whole innings for once?

Alleged ace Chris Archer continued his spiral Thursday in another lousy loss to the Indians at the FruitDome. And there were plenty of dents and dings to go around.

Archer coughed up three runs (two earned) and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings, making all that preseason hype directed toward him seem as worthless as a Soviet ruble. (Does he have any shred of fastball command?)

Then Steve Geltz, Dana Eveland and Danny Farquhar were tagged for one run each. Only Ryan Webb left unscathed among Rays pitchers who faced down the Tribe’s lethal lumber.

This was a disaster in so many ways. Archer was awful. Logan Morrison, Brad Miller and Hank Conger – three key offseason pickups – all stunk as bad as a landfill on a hot summer afternoon. Silver linings were nonexistent.

It’s hard to blame the bullpen for a shutout defeat, given how the game was a lost cause because of Archer’s face plant and the offense’s disappearing act. Still, it should be a concern that perhaps bullpen cracks have started to show after relievers held up well early.

Is more trouble to come?

We’ll see.

But man, after Thursday, the outlook doesn’t look good.

Total garbage…and Archer was getting annoyed by the questions about his fastball location. Maybe the Zenmaster has got it in his head now.

Who ever crowned crowned King Archer may have been a bit premature.

    Luckily Miguel missed this game.

    Where’s Loney???

  3. bob Says:

Loney is history, but Richie Schaeffer is ready and able. C’mon Rays, change it up before we are 3-30
