Wounded at Fright House

What is it about Bright House Field in Clearwater?

The Fright House produced another hold-your-breath moment for Rays fans yesterday during Tampa Bay’s 6-1 win over Philadelphia. Evan Longoria walked off the field with a left shin contusion after a foul ball bounced off his leg in the first inning.

Fortunately, Longoria’s situation seems to be more of a close call than a direct hit. He’s considered day-to-day, and he could even return today.

You’ll remember that, exactly one year earlier, right-hander Alex Cobb developed forearm tightness while pitching against the Phillies at Bright House Field. That day, he claimed the injury wasn’t serious. Two months later, he underwent Tommy John surgery.

It sounds like the Rays dodged a headache with Longoria. Although the three-time All-Star isn’t the hitter he used to be, an extended absence would hurt. And you can’t forget Longoria’s impeccable defense.

The good news: Opening Day is in 16 days. There’s time for any lingering pain for Longoria to disappear.

The better news: The Rays can wave bye-bye to the Fright House until next spring.
