Rays Win Cuba Lottery

March 1st, 2016

CastroRaysThe Rays got what they wanted and will leave the country in three weeks.

Tampa Bay will play the Cuban National Team in an exhibition at Estadio Latinoamericano in Havana on March 22, per RaysBaseball.com. This will be the first Cuba visit by a Major League franchise since Baltimore played there in spring training 17 years ago.

The Rays were chosen via a lottery. Many teams had their hats in the mix.

Joe gets that this game has cultural and historical significance, but it’s really just another meaningless game. It’ll be interesting, though, to see whether the Rays use it as a true dress rehearsal for the season in order to represent the league well.

Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports on Twitter that each Rays player will receive $10,000 for the trip. That’s a lot of cigars.
