Lab Work For Odorizzi

March 12th, 2016

OdorizziJake Odorizzi is working on being way more dangerous.

Yesterday against Pittsburgh, he was fiddling with new out pitches, per RaysBaseball.com.

“I was trying some new stuff today. I was throwing my curveball with two strikes, trying to get a strikeout pitch,” said Odorizzi, who threw 30 of his 54 pitches for strikes while walking two and striking out three. “They laid off those but I’m just trying to experiment with off-speed pitches with two-strike counts, and I think that’s kind of driving my pitch count up a little bit.”

Perhaps that’s one reason Odorizzi wasn’t concerned by Andrew McCutchen belting a homer off him to start the fourth inning. Odorizzi went 3 1/3 innings in the Rays’ 4-3 win. Odorizzi’s three-hit outing was quiet outside of the bomb.

The Rays host the hated Yankees today at 1:05 p.m., as Matt Moore makes his second start of the Spring.

What are we going to do about a closer? We knew Boxberger was hurting in the off season. Now he gets an operation ? Curious !
