Mile High Bomb Travels With Dickerson
March 4th, 2016
New arrival Corey Dickerson goes all Babe Ruth in Spring Training Game 2
Corey Dickerson left quite the first impression Thursday … and a telescope was required to appreciate its full glory.
The former Colorado crusher launched a 569-foot home run to right field in the second inning of the Rays’ win over the Orioles at Charlotte Sports Park. Joe’s no expert on altitude, but it’s fair to say “Mile High Magic” wasn’t at play under those palms in Charlotte County.
Of course, this means nothing in the large scheme of things. It’s fun to gawk at the moonshot, which landed on the clubhouse building’s roof, bounced and rolled, and led to a nice photo opp for the Rays.
But Dickerson, who has a fair number of doubters, must make his cuts count when the games turn serious.
Is this a sign of things to come? Here’s how Dickerson described teammates’ reaction to his rocket, via 620wdae.com audio:
“They were really pumped up. I think this team’s excited right now. We’re really enjoying getting to know each other. We can’t wait for the season to start, and we’ve got a lot of excitement.”
Goodness knows the Rays need a consistent power threat. Dickerson was brought here to add bite offensively, so he will be judged on his ability to do so.
Joe hopes Thursday’s home run was the first of many.
